Meetings on winter storm preparations
Officials from several government agencies will host the first of two community meetings Saturday on steps being taken to prepare for possible mud and debris flows this winter in the scorched hills above north Glendale and La Crescenta.
With the Station fire consuming much of the hillside vegetation that keeps soil in place, officials are worried that forecasts of a wet El Niño weather pattern this winter could mean heavy rain run-off with the potential for mudslides and debris flows.
The first meeting will take place at 10 a.m. at the Center for Spiritual Living, 4845 Dunsmore Ave. The second meeting is at 7 p.m. Monday, also at the center.
Lineup for Unity Fest unveiled
City officials Wednesday announced the entertainment lineup for the eighth annual Unity Fest on Oct. 11 in downtown.
Performances will be given by Korean Drums, Maggie Tune Children’s Songs, Holy Family High School Performance Arts, Glendale High School Choir, Immortals Chinese Lion Dance, Scandia Dancers, Rosarito Follorico Dance, Hamazkayin Niari Group Armenian Dance, Korean Dance, Celtic Band, Hawaiian Dance and Hoover High School Jazz Band.
The free festival, created to celebrate Glendale’s cultural diversity, will also be replete with international food vendors, artisans and farmer’s market.
It will take place on Brand Boulevard between California and Lexington streets from noon to 6 p.m.

CHP to talk teen driver safety
The California Highway Patrol, in collaboration with the Glendale Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department, will host a free teen driver safety workshop Thursday.
A patrol officer will speak about safety issues for drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians in a workshop tailored for youth 15 to 18 years old.
Officials will tow in a battered car for demonstration. Light refreshments will be provided.
The workshop is scheduled to take place from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Thursday at Maple Park Community Center, 820 E. Maple St. To make a reservation, call (818) 548-2798.
Humane Society rep to discuss care
Ricky Whitman, vice president of community resources for the Pasadena Humane Society and SPCA will appear live Thursday on “ABCTVLIVE With Vrej Agajanian” to discuss animal care, control and animal welfare, among other topics.
She will talk about the humane society’s upcoming Sept. 27 fundraiser.
The interview will air 9 to 10 p.m. on Charter Cable Channel 284.
